Separate Storage and Controlled Reconstitution of Lyophilized Material

Why keep the powder and the solvent apart

Lyophilization (freeze-drying) removes water from a material so that it can be kept as a dry solid. Many peptides are supplied in this form because the dry state is generally less reactive than a solution. Once solvent is added, the material is no longer in the state in which it was supplied.

For that reason, the conventional approach keeps the dry material and the solvent in separate containers until the moment of use. A dual chamber cartridge keeps the same separation, but inside one container.

How separation is maintained

StageWhat the cartridge does
StorageThe dry cake sits in the front chamber; the solvent sits in the rear chamber; a stopper closes the space between them
ActivationThe rear stopper is advanced and the middle stopper moves towards the bypass
CombinationThe solvent passes through the bypass into the front chamber and meets the dry material

The combining step happens inside the closed cartridge. No separate transfer of solvent from one container to another is needed. This is the main practical difference from a vial workflow.

Controlled, not automatic

The word "controlled" here means that the two components combine only when the system is deliberately activated, and only in the proportions set when the cartridge was filled. The cartridge does not decide when reconstitution takes place; the user does. Follow the product documentation supplied with the specific item.

What still needs to be checked

  • Match the product name, strength and lot number on the pen to the relevant laboratory report.
  • Read which tests the report actually contains, and which it does not.
  • Follow the storage conditions printed on the label or product page.
  • Treat any information that is not reported as unknown, rather than assuming a result.

Packaging format alone does not establish stability, shelf life or microbiological quality. Those can only be supported by data for the specific batch and conditions.
