How a Dual Chamber Cartridge System Works

Dual chamber technology

One container, two compartments

A conventional lyophilized research material usually involves at least three separate items: a vial holding the freeze-dried powder, a second container holding the solvent, and a transfer tool. A dual chamber cartridge combines the first two into a single glass container with two consecutive compartments.

In the Dual Chamber Peptides format, the front chamber of the cartridge holds the lyophilized peptide as a dry cake and the rear chamber holds the solvent. The cartridge sits inside a pen body that carries the product label, the batch (lot) number, the expiry date and a QR code.

The three parts that matter

ComponentRole in the system
Front chamberHolds the freeze-dried (lyophilized) material
Middle stopperKeeps the two chambers physically separate during storage
BypassA short channel in the glass wall that lets the solvent move past the middle stopper when the system is activated

Glass manufacturers describe the same principle in their technical literature: two components sit in two consecutive chambers separated by a plunger, and a bypass formed in the glass allows the contents to combine only when intended. See SCHOTT Pharma's description of double chamber cartridges.

What happens on activation

When the rear stopper is advanced, the solvent pushes the middle stopper forward. Once the middle stopper reaches the bypass, the solvent flows around it into the front chamber and meets the lyophilized material. Until that moment the dry material and the solvent do not touch.

Device designers use the same idea in different mechanisms. Ypsomed, for example, describes a twisting mechanism for reconstituting lyophilized formulations inside a dual chamber device. See Ypsomed LyoTwist. These sources explain the general technology; they are not evidence of who manufactures a particular pen.

What the design does not establish

A two-chamber format describes how material is packaged. It does not by itself establish purity, the amount present, microbiological quality or how long a material remains stable. Those questions are answered only by batch-specific laboratory reports. Always match the lot number on the pen to the relevant report before relying on a result.
